OKASILIMIKAIA
I’m Mikaiah.
I don’t want to be just one thing and I don’t think we’re meant to be. At our core, we’re learners. Constantly absorbing, experimenting, evolving. I chase that. I test ideas, try everything, and find meaning in every phase, every creative impulse. No hobby is too many. No detour is wasted. The ones that stick shape who we are.
Exploring has brought me here: I am a writer, a sewist, and a visual composer.
I build things that breathe—on paper, in fabric, and through the lens.
MIKAIAH OKASILI
Jack of All Trades.
My creativity exists across different mediums, but at it’s heart, it’s always about connection, reflection, and capturing what’s real.
My book is about the complexity of what we owe to one another and how complacency shapes us. It explores the distance we feel from the world around us. Inspired by life, the people I’ve shared it with, the strangers I’ve encountered, and the world we all live in.
The short film I made is a sneak peek into the world I’m building in that book, a visual translation of the first page of the first chapter. I wanted to capture the emotions and the mindset I had when I was first writing.
Film photography is intimate, tangible, and requires patience. The kind of patience that’s rare these days. I shoot to capture human nature; the rawness, the soul, the things we don’t always see in the moment but feel when we look back.
And sewing—something I started out of necessity—has become my meditation. It forces me to slow down and be present, in a way that no other hobby does. A practice of creating from scratch with no patterns, just intuition and patience.
